SAIL Partners with John Cockerill India to Advance Green Steel Technologies

Focus on carbon steel processing, silicon steel, and emission reduction technologies

The MoU aims to integrate advanced processes and green technologies in steel production

SAIL and John Cockerill India sign MoU to leverage expertise in steel innovation.

Focus on Cold Rolled Grain Oriented (CRGO) and Cold Rolled Non-Oriented (CRNO) steels.

Key goals include integrating green steelmaking processes and boosting efficiency.

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), India’s largest public sector steel producer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with John Cockerill India Limited (JCIL), the Indian subsidiary of the global John Cockerill Group.

The MoU, signed in Mumbai, aims to combine expertise in advanced steelmaking and green technologies. Mr. Anil Kumar Tulsiani, Director (Finance) of SAIL, and Mr. Michael Kotas, Managing Director of JCIL's Metals Division, formalized the partnership.

The collaboration will focus on implementing cutting-edge solutions for cold rolling and processing carbon steel, CRGO (Cold Rolled Grain Oriented), and CRNO (Cold Rolled Non-Oriented) silicon steels. These materials are critical for applications like energy-efficient transformers and electrical infrastructure. Additionally, the partnership will develop and integrate green technologies to reduce carbon emissions and improve resource efficiency in steel production.

Technical Focus

India’s steel industry, contributing nearly 2% to GDP, is a major source of industrial emissions. Transitioning to green steel processes aligns with India’s net-zero targets and enhances competitiveness globally. CRGO and CRNO silicon steels, vital for energy equipment, align with India's renewable energy growth and electrification goals.

The partnership reflects SAIL’s commitment to aligning operations with global sustainability benchmarks. "This collaboration will not only modernize our processes but also help us contribute to India's green future," said Mr. Tulsiani. John Cockerill’s expertise in advanced technologies is expected to complement SAIL's existing infrastructure.

By adopting innovations like green hydrogen in steelmaking, SAIL is positioning itself to meet evolving market demands and regulatory standards. This MoU is part of SAIL's broader strategy to enhance efficiency, cut emissions, and build a sustainable production ecosystem.
