ONGC and PowerGrid Unite to Boost India's Green Hydrogen Future

Landmark agreement to advance green hydrogen and clean energy initiatives in line with India's climate goals

Green hydrogen and renewable energy pave the way for a low-carbon future

  • ONGC and PowerGrid Corporation signed a MoU to collaborate on green hydrogen and clean energy projects.

  • The partnership aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming for global leadership in green hydrogen.

  • ONGC targets 10 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030 and net-zero carbon emissions (Scope 1 & 2) by 2038.

On December 12, 2024, ONGC and PowerGrid Corporation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi to jointly develop projects in green hydrogen and clean energy. The MoU was signed by ONGC’s S.K. Dwivedi, Chief JV&BD, and PowerGrid’s CGM Sunil Kumar Gupta, with senior leaders including ONGC Director Arunangshu Sarkar and PowerGrid Director Dr. Yatindra Dwivedi present.

This collaboration underscores India's commitment to accelerating its transition to a low-carbon economy. It aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), which aims to position India as a leader in green hydrogen production, applications, and exports. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels, the partnership marks a significant step toward achieving the country’s climate goals and fostering a sustainable energy ecosystem.

Technical Focus

India’s renewable energy market is the third-largest globally, with an installed capacity exceeding 175 GW as of 2024. The government aims to reach 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The National Green Hydrogen Mission targets producing 5 MMT (Million Metric Tons) of green hydrogen annually by 2030, unlocking investments of ₹8 lakh crore ($96 billion) and generating over 6 lakh jobs.

“This MoU marks a significant step towards a cleaner energy future,” said ONGC Director Arunangshu Sarkar, emphasizing the potential of green hydrogen as a viable alternative. PowerGrid’s Director, Dr Yatindra Dwivedi, added, “We are excited to partner with ONGC and accelerate India’s journey to a sustainable and low-carbon economy.”

ONGC’s Energy Strategy 2040 outlines its goals to achieve 10 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2038. The company is diversifying into solar, wind, green hydrogen, and geothermal energy. Chief JV&BD S.K. Dwivedi highlighted ONGC's ongoing initiatives toward decarbonization, reaffirming its commitment to energy transition and sustainability.
