New partnership with CleanMax will deliver renewable energy through a 33 MW Captive Power Plant in Maharashtra, advancing Equinix’s carbon neutrality goals

Equinix partners with CleanMax to build a 33 MW renewable energy plant, powering data centers in Mumbai
Equinix signs its first Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in India with CleanMax to power its Mumbai data centers.
The 33 MW Captive Power Project, featuring solar and wind capacity, is expected to be fully operational in 2025.
Equinix’s renewable energy initiatives now span 23 PPAs worldwide, covering nine countries and contributing over 3.1 million MWh annually.
Equinix, the world’s digital infrastructure company®, has signed a landmark Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in India with CleanMax, a leading renewable energy provider in Asia’s Commercial and Industrial (C&I) sector and a Brookfield-backed company. Under the agreement, Equinix and CleanMax will build a 33 MW Captive Power Plant in Maharashtra, designed to supply renewable energy that aligns with the energy consumption of Equinix’s data centres in Mumbai. This partnership will be crucial in advancing India’s renewable energy goals while supporting Equinix’s regional growth.
This PPA underscores Equinix's strategy to prioritize renewable energy for its operations worldwide and emphasizes the potential for PPAs to help global companies meet sustainability goals by securing local renewable energy. With Equinix’s Mumbai data centres slated to be powered by this plant, the initiative also contributes to India’s renewable energy targets, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to clean energy and furthering Equinix’s own goal of carbon neutrality by 2030.
Technical Focus
India’s renewable energy market is growing rapidly, with an installed capacity of over 100 GW, driven by government incentives and a favourable climate. Solar energy continues to dominate, while wind energy has expanded significantly, especially in Maharashtra. As data centres in India require reliable and sustainable energy solutions, partnerships like this are expected to play a critical role. PPAs are increasingly popular as they offer stable energy costs and facilitate renewable energy investments that drive sector growth.
The Captive Power Project in Maharashtra will encompass 26.4 MW of solar power and 6.6 MW of wind power and is set to become operational in phases by 2025. Once fully active, this project will provide renewable energy to Equinix’s data centres in Mumbai, marking Equinix’s first renewable energy venture in India. “By partnering with CleanMax, we are committed to scaling our renewable energy coverage in the region,” an Equinix spokesperson stated. “This collaboration will help us further our commitment to environmental responsibility, supporting our operations and India’s clean energy future.”
This PPA in India represents one of Equinix’s broader global commitments to sustainable energy. In early 2024, Equinix signed similar PPAs in Australia and Singapore. With 23 PPAs worldwide, Equinix is positioned to contribute over 3.1 million MWh of renewable energy annually across various regions. This international expansion reflects Equinix’s ongoing dedication to supporting renewable energy infrastructure and achieving carbon neutrality across its global operations.
